"True Stories" may not the Talking Heads best album, but it''s definitely full of charm and flavor. This is an unusual album. It''s considered a soundtrack to the movie, "True Stories". I''ve never seen the film so I can''t really comment on that. I do enjoy this strange piece of art. This record signifies the end of the beginning for the band. This album feels much more like a David Byrne album than a Talking Heads album. But the songs on "True Stories" are really good and diverse. "Hey Now" is a cool, calypso-flavored gem. "Puzzlin'' Evidence" is a pop song disguised as a gospel tune. Love the choir in the background. "People Like Us" borrows from country and bluegrass. And don''t forget the ballads! "Dream Operator" and "City of Dreams" are the bands most beautifully-written songs. Byrne proves he''s not only a gifted songwriter but a strong vocalist as well. Those 2 songs alone are reason enough to purchase "True Stories". "Wild Wild Life" (there''s also an extended mix included) and "Love For Sale" were the hit singles. "Love For Sale" is definitely the most important track. Love the tempo changes and the lyrics are genius. The song is about corporate greed and America''s fascination with materialism. It was the ''80s after all. "Radio Head" is my favorite song on the album. And yes the band, Radiohead named themselves after this song. The only track I don''t care for is "Papa Legba". It''s a very disjointed, messy song with a lazy arrangement. Too bad. "True Stories" is a fun album. If you like weird, obscure ''80s albums then this one is for you. Enjoy!

After seeing the movie in 1986, I was surprised to hear this album. In the movie, it was the actors who sang all of these songs, but it was certainly fun to hear the Heads do them. Nonetheless, it would be great to hear the actual soundtrack--perhaps a double album with this disc. Anyway, none of these tracks contain throw-away tunes; on the contrary, it is fitting that the release of this album was sandwiched between "Little Creatures" and "Naked." It''s hard to choose a favorite from this album, but "Puzzlin'' Evidence," "Wild Wild Life," Radio Head," and...forget it, they are all good.

I am a Talking Heads fan. Their work can be divided into three eras - Early, Eno, & later. I love the early stuff, but may prefer the Eno section, however there are gems throughout their entire catalog.

FTR - Stop Making Sense is the finest concert DVD I own and represents all three sections including a Tom Tom Club tune - the original quartet fortified with a ferocious band, including Bernie Worrell!

True Stories contains several first rate songs. The production is the issue that must put people off - it does me. If you are used to the funky poli-rhythms of the Eno period (and even Little Creatures and Naked, which followed), then this is a big surprise. I would suggest that even the early albums were funkier than True Stories, certainly more subtle and delicate.

True Lies has a big, unfunky, drum beat. Not necessarily a bad thing, it rocks harder than most TH albums. It propels some of their most popular tunes very nicely. However, it feels less sophisticated than any other Talking Heads recording. Were they aspiring to more success in AOR? Hard to say. I would suggest that the return to the heavily syncopated beats in Naked proves the point that even the band felt they were not optimizing their sound.

Bad record? No. David Byrne and the Talking Heads don''t make BAD records. This just isn''t their best one.

Often cited as a weak album but to me, True Stories is Talking Heads at their absolute best. The 1986 film of the same title directed by David Byrne had originally the actors perform the songs and a separate soundtrack album was released to accompany it but the rest of the Talking Heads insisted that they record an album of them playing the songs. What became of it is in my opinion some of the best songs in the group''s catalogue. Only one track here that''s a little weak which is "Papa Legba" but the rest are so amazing that it makes up for it. Includes some of Byrne''s most powerful and uplifting songs like the superb "Dream Operator", "People Like Us" and "City Of Dreams". Most popular song here is the catchy "Wild Wild Life." Fun fact: a certain band called Radiohead named themselves after a tune from this record.

Hiss and boo to those who critically pan True Stories - sorry it isn''t what you wanted it to be. Has David Byrne ever made music to fit demand? This isn''t his absolute best work - but with seventeen solo and group works only one can fit that bill.

Highly recommended.

Having listened to their albums chronologically, I was not particularly looking forward to this instalment in the band''s discography, but lo and behold, against what a lot of the critics said, and what I was going by (I generally agreed with them about TH albums up to this point), I enjoyed it a heck of a lot: does it have the revolutionary, varied brilliance of Fear or Light? hell no. Does it have the consistently quality, bouncy melodic nature of tongues or creatures? again, no, but Looking at it for what it is rather than what it isn''t, got to say, has some of my fave Talking Head songs on it: stylistically, it veers from bouncy, off beat rock with a poppy edge to the second half''s more creatures-like melodic style, albeit with a , to these ears, at least, more balladic almost power pop like style. And luckily, whatever style you get on this admittedly hodgepodge album, the quality is always good, songs always enjoyable: is it as consistent as their previous releases? no. Is it still a cracking'' wee album filled with highlights? oh yes; My personal highlights are Wild wild life, with its ferocious vocals in the verse and the quite frankly, stunningly catchy, brilliantly delivered chorus. Dream operator and People like us, side by side, both had great, melodic, almost balladic like choruses that were very heartfelt and enjoyable: poppy in the extreme, yes, but just very, very emotional and enjoyable, thanks to Byrne''s always fantastic vocal delivery (he actually really does excel in the more emotionally bare moments doesn''t he!: and to complete it all, hey now has a great chorus as well, very poppy in a bouncy way like wild wild side, and VERRRY catchy indeed. Non song related highlights would definitely have to be Byrne''s vocals: he was great at the talking style light stuff, the off beat stuff on tongues, fear, etc, as well as the more poppy stuff, and the stylistic range of this album makes sure his voice in all it''s forms are presented well; and they really are: particular highlights are his upbeat delivery during the chorus of wild wild life, the snarl during it''s verse and his emotional delivery during the album''s more balladic, sentimental moments. All in all, a great, small-scale album and a truly fantastic surprise: no bad songs at all, just great, enjoyable, mostly melodic pop-rock songs with a noticeable Talking Heads style bounce and touch: their least consistent by far, to me, but that really is only because of how high a standard they set before and after True Stories: This ain''t life-changing like Remain in Light, but during its more melodious moments, you''ll definitely feel it''s a bit life-affirming. 08/10 Best track: Wild, wild life Worst track: papa legaba (not bad, just the least effective)
